I believe I pay $39 every 6 months but that's with support and knowing my XP's have some care and safety since being completely abandoned now by MS. It goes through your system and finds all sorts of things that slow it down. I also broke down after years of "only free stuff" and purchased Advanced System Repair Pro. You can reduce the resolution, the colors, and the complexity of the Windows interface to improve performance over slower connections. Besides removing the unnecessary Services the only other thing is add memory to the board. But again, with the XP's you can't expect a lot of speed. Also I highly suggest you go through your Services and see which ones you can disable. They are not made for memory hogging programs of today. I suggest you take any programs off you can. My 2 old timer's, my XP's, can be slow too. ![]() But having been on the web since 1996 I've had to solve a lot of problems John I'm not the brightest bulb in the room when it comes to a lot of high tech. So that explained the constant activity that was taking up 98 percent of the processor time and making the laptop run like a slug. I think what was happening was that the system was repeatedly trying to connect with the Windows Updates site, but as we all know, there are no more Windows updates for Windows XP. The laptop now runs faster than it ever did. I finally found that by disabling Automatic Updates, the near last Service on the list cured the problem. What I did was to disable all the processes then re-enable them in blocks of 12, click Apply, OK, then restart the computer and look in the Task Manager to see if the offending svchost.exe was still hogging processor time. You can stop any service by un-ticking the box next to it, or stop all by clicking Disable All. Looking under the Services tab will show you all the services running in Win XP. This brings up the System Configuration Utility. What i did next was to go to Start-Run and ran msconfig. So a Win XP application was hogging all the processor time, but which one? Svchost.exe is an internal Windows application that runs services from dynamic link libraries (dll's). Having a look in the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) showed that a process svchost.exe was hogging 98 percent of the processor time. I recently pulled my old Asus EeePC Win XP laptop out of the cupboard and decided to update it with some extra ram (1Gb to 2Gb) and cloned the old 40Gb HDD to a new 120Gb SSD.Īll went well with the hardware upgrade, but the computer ran really slow when with the new hardware it should have been powering along. ![]()
